Building History A Piece of Portland Architectural HistoryOur Hawthorne dental office was the first building built as a stand-alone dental office in Portland, Oregon. It was built in English tutor style in 1934 under the direction of Patterson Dental. Prior to this stand-alone building on 5043 Southeast Hawthorne Boulevard, all the dental offices were in multi-story buildings with the majority of dental offices in downtown Portland. Dr. Floyd Milne was the first doctor in the building. Housed in this tiny office was Dr. Milne on one side and a physician on the other. He practiced only a few years before his death and then his cousin took over, another Dr. Milne. The practice was sold to Dr. William Becker in 1947 and he worked the practice until 1993, when Dr. Jill Price took the helm. The building originally touted a beautiful recovery room with mahogany doors and a day bed with mahogany drawers and glass pulls. There was even an early buzzer system to let the doctor in the back know you were there for your appointment. History of patient records were on small cards, and the manual "barber-shop" style chairs pumped you up. The office door still has the original 1934 bell that chimes and welcomes you as you walk through the front door. There are patients in the practice that have been coming to the office their entire lives, and they are always happy to hear the sound of the door bell that's been there since they were a child. Through the years the practice has maintained the balance of this historic charm with the addition of the latest in dental technologies and healthcare practices. Each of the treatment rooms have windows that look out onto the natural calm of the inner courtyard. Each of the treatment rooms is equipped with the latest in diagnostic, communications, and treatment technologies. The quaint charm and warmth of the office still exudes in the reception room with the coved ceilings, heavy plaster, and mahogany moldings, letting the patients know that we have stood the test of time. |
